Civil and Spanish American Wars Veteran's Memorial and Park
Olympic Byway, County Rt. 3, near Carthage in Jefferson County
Monument Park contains several veterans memorials, the original Village of Carthage burying ground, and is the gathering place for local ceremonies.
On the corner of State Street, Route 3, and North Clinton Streets, the park was begun in 1821. The day after the Great Carthage Fire of 1884, the local newspaper declared, "Saved By a Graveyard " because the village’s original burying ground served as a firebreak that kept flames under control. A couple decades later citizens of Carthage raised memorials to those who gave their lives in the Civil War. The impressive, 45 foot obelisk of Barre granite was erected in 1902.
