Speculator

Adirondack Trail, State Rt. 30 and State Rt. 8, in Hamilton County

Two Scenic Byways meet in Speculator, where the economy is based on recreation and enjoying the many lakes and rivers in the area.

Speculator offers easy access to some of the Adirondack North Country's most wonderful four season recreation resources. They include many picturesque hikes for people of all abilities, beautiful spots for quiet paddling, and great winter sports including snowmobiling.

If you enjoy nature or are a birder, you'll love the area because of the numerous species in the region's diverse habitat that includes forest woodlands, marshlands, meadows, and ponds. On a stroll into the Perkins Clearing area see the Mourning Warbler, Wood Warblers, and the Blackpoll Warbler, along with many other mixed woodland habitat species. The Northville/Lake Placid Trail will take you into a beautiful wetland area where you may see nesting waterfowl, including Great Blue Heron, Common Loons, and several duck species.

A system of mountain biking trails has also been developed near Speculator.

The area between Speculator and Indian Lake has been called “Moose Alley.” It’s one of the first areas where moose have become established in New York State
