Moss Lake, Vista, Mountain Pond NYSDEC Trailhead

Central Adirondack Trail, State Rt. 28, near Eagle Bay in Herkimer County

These trails all have scenic destinations within an hour's hike or mountain bike ride of Eagle Bay.

Go up Big Moose Road (from Eagle Bay / Route 28) and stop wherever you see a brown DEC trailhead sign. A beginner can't go wrong.

This is lake country, so there are few hills of any size. Stream crossings and mud wallows are more common obstacles. The trail around Moss Lake is gentle rolling double track hills. Vista Trail runs from Eagle Bay to Lake Rondaxe; an excellent family hike or mountain bike ride. This route has long flat sections as it follows an abandoned railroad corridor south from Eagle Bay. Enjoy occasional views of Fourth Lake on the far side of Route 28 and gain access to other parts of the Old Forge Mountain Bike Trail System near Lake Rondaxe. Mountain Pond is off the old Carey Lake Road; the trail cuts north off the road just past (west of) Carey Lake and its backcountry campsite. Beautiful hike, lots of blueberries and raspberries in season.
