Great Sacandaga Lake
Adirondack Trail, State Rt. 30, near Northville in Fulton County
Great Sacandaga Lake is a large reservoir in the southeast portion of the Adirondack Park.
Sacandaga is an old Mohawk word meaning "The Land of Waving Grass." The lake is a man-made reservoir created in 1930 to protect downstream areas as far away as Albany from devastating annual floods and summer droughts.
Today the lake has a surface area of about 42 square miles at capacity and a length of about 29 miles. Fishing and boating are main activities. Although the lake and some lands surrounding it are owned by New York State, no public money is used to manage the reservoir. Approximately 70% of the District's revenues come from lease agreements with electrical power companies who run the hydroelectric turbines in the dam.
