Hubbell Memorial Chimney

Adirondack Trail, State Rt. 30, near Northville in Fulton County

Every year on May 6th, residents and visitors gather to watch the swifts swoop down the Hubbell Chimney at dusk.

An annual nesting places for Chimney swifts after their spring return from the Amazon jungle, the Village of Northville makes a family day every May 6 by planning activities before dusk. Then hundreds of swifts appear, whirling and circling the chimney. At some precise moment of time, they look like they are being suctioned into the chimney as they make their descent. This is the site of the Ray Hubbell Glove Company in Northville which in 1918, was destroyed by a fire, and all that remains is its tall, stately chimney. Directions are enter the Village from Route 30 on Bridge Street, go to Second Street, turn left, and the chimney is on your left. Of note, May 6 is also Ray Hubbell’s birthdate.
