Wilmington

Olympic Byway, State Rt. 86, in Essex County

Scenic Wilmington, home to Whiteface Mountain, on the banks of the Ausable River.

Wilmington is one of the gateway communities that will take you into the Whiteface and Lake Placid regions of the Olympic Trail. If you're planning a visit to Whiteface Mountain, this peacefull village is the place you'll start. Ride the chairlift or drive to the summit on the Veterans Memorial Highway for breathtaking vistas of the heart of the High Peaks region of New York State's vast Adirondack Park.

You'll find plenty of outdoor and family activities in the summer, including fishing, hiking, swimming, and mountain biking. Enjoy free concerts at the Town Beach on the Au Sable River.

Fly fishing shops and guides available for instruction and tips so you can experience superb fly fishing in a special catch-and-release section of the West Branch of the AuSable River.

As you enjoy the many friendly communities in towns like this one along the Olympic Scenic Byway you'll find relaxing opportunities for enjoyable walks, places to eat, and museums and historic sites where you can learn more about the area.

The byway reveals nature’s renaissance with a patchwork blend of picturesque communities, small-scale industry, and natural beauty. The 170-mile route starts near Lake Champlain at Keeseville on the east end, and near Lake Ontario by Sackets Harbor and Watertown on the west. From those two great water bodies, the route travels up into the Adirondack Mountain region through the heart of Adirondack Park. Along the way the AuSable, Raquette, Oswegatchie, and Black Rivers will help guide your way with their scenic waterfalls, pools, and riffles.
