Wanakena Footbridge

Olympic Byway, State Rt. 3, near Star Lake in St. Lawrence County

The Wanakena Footbridge, which spans the Oswegatchie River in the Adirondack hamlet of Wanakena, has the distinction of being the largest suspension footbridge in the United States.

Built in 1902 by the Rich Lumber Company, this suspension bridge spans 171 feet between the supporting towers. In 1999, the Wanakena Footbridge was placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the U.S. Department of the Interior.
