Panther Mountain

Olympic Byway, State Rt. 3, near Tupper Lake in Franklin County

There are actually several Panther Mountains in NYS, but this is the 2,238 foot Panther Mountain, off Route 3 near Tupper Lake, south of Wawbeek.

The trailhead sign is located on Route 3, at 1.6 miles from the intersection with NY Route 30. Drive east toward Saranac Lake until you see the parking area on the right, the trailhead is immediately opposite on the left. The trail is about 0.8 mile one way, a steady progression through pines, maples, and birch trees to the exposed rocky and grassy summit. On the top, the smokestacks of Tupper Lake are visible on the western horizon. Panther Pond lies to the south. There are also good views of Ampersand, the Sewards, and the Raquette valley.
