Explore the Scenic Byways of Northern New York
Welcome to the Adirondack North Country Scenic Byways! Nine of our thirteen byways take you into the heart of millions of acres in the Adirondack Mountain region. This is an area of rolling hills, deep forests, and mountain peaks. Among the features that make it unlike any other travel experience are the waterways—literally thousands of lakes, ponds, and miles and miles of rivers and streams, still pristine, yet accessible.
In many places, Scenic Byways are designed to take you off an area’s main transportation routes and onto roads with special intrinsic qualities that create exceptional driving experiences.
In the Adirondack North Country, our Scenic Byways are so much more than exceptional driving experiences. They are, in fact, the routes used every day by the people who live and work here. They are the vital lifelines that connect our more than 200 colorful communities whose residents treasure the region’s long, rich history, and who celebrate our cultural traditions everyday. They are your gateways to countless areas of exceptional scenic beauty, where you can hear birds and see wildlife in native habitats, gaze at wildflowers and stare in awe at the splendor of the star-filled sky. They are your passageways to places to rejuvenate and revitalize, and to just have fun.
A special feature of this website that appears on the left side of every page is Popular Picks. These lists change as you move through the site, highlighting great opportunities in relation to specific communities and resources. There are specific details on more than 600 of these traveler’s treasures, things you can see and do along the Scenic Byways - all non-commercial and most for minimal or no cost.
Are you planning a visit to our region? Are you already here and want ideas about special places to explore? This website is designed to help you make the most of your travels in the Adirondack North Country region by currently featuring three of the region's Scenic Byways--the Adirondack Trail, the Olympic, and the Central Adirondack Trail. You can click the themes to the left under Explore by Interest to learn where you can go, and things you can do along each of the byways to follow your special interests and hobbies.
If you’re looking for suggestions for specific commercial lodging, dining, attractions, and shopping, Plan Your Stay provides links to local and regional tourism websites that have this information.
Whether you come for a day, a week, or for the season, will drive a few or many miles to get here, or enjoy these scenic byways as part of your own “back yard,” welcome!
