Turning Point Park

Olympic Byway, State Rt. 3, near Carthage in Jefferson County

Carthage has a waterfront park at Turning Point, where this section of the Black River has a very low gradient.

Turning Point Park is the home of many local events including a farmers market and fireworks. The village of Carthage offers access to a large quiet water section of the Black River that is well suited for boating and fishing. Carthage also boasts a lovely area of historic structures on the National Register. Turning Point Park is so named because it was the northern terminus of the New York State Canal System’s Black River Canal, namely the place where boatmen had to turn around due to the rapids downstream. Look for signs at the bridge, or end of State Street, pointing roughly eastward to the park.
